Julie's Process, Defined

I don’t start my paintings with a sketch or any other preparation, they are always 100% organic in shape and movement. I do have some favorite styles that reappear in my art work, or themes, if you will.. but I basically never know what I am going to get when I start to paint.

I like it best this way. I have tried the “sketch beforehand” approach. I have tried reproducing various color studies, etc. When I paint this way, the paintings often feel contrived and forced. Instead, I paint with feeling, and emotions. The warm-up exercises I begin each canvas with are never the same twice!

My art can be influenced by something I see outside in San Diego. Also, things I hear on the news or see in a magazine can also influence the piece. Sometimes one single influence generates an entire painting, other times, the paint changes several times and reacts with different stimuli I see, feel, or hear.

I think the biggest and most important thing to know is that however you want to start and continue with a painting, it should be YOUR process. Practice painting a lot and decide which method you like best. There is no right or wrong way to paint abstract like this.

When you take an online workshop, you should watch the workshop with the understanding that the artist is presenting you their process. Their process is their process. You should never feel discouraged if you cannot replicate exactly what is being shown in the workshop. Instead, try it and experiment with the content and understand that you are developing your own voice. Your creative process!

The more you paint, the more you learn. You not only learn about the behavior of paint and mediums, you learn about yourself. Figure out what you like and don’t like. Never stop practicing and experimenting.

For more information on my techniques and process, please consider my online painting workshops. You can view the catalogue by clicking here. You should never take an online workshop without the instructor. In all of my workshops, I present the opportunity for dialogue with all students daily. If you need help or guidance, or if you have any questions about acrylic paint or product, I am here for you online.
