Up close and personal, Naturally

I have emerged from my summer hiatus and completed my first painting, “Naturally”, inspired by the colors of Beryl and Tourmaline gemstones that my grandfather mined on the east coast of the United States many years ago, before I was born. The collection of rough also has pieces of aquamarine and golden beryl that are very exciting to touch and view under magnification.

My favorite part of my education was gemstone identification. Examining the color, inclusions and crystal structure of colored stones to determine their identity a puzzle I love to solve every time.

The idea to follow my gemstone collection into an abstract painting came from Instagram. I have a deep love for gemology and the accounts that I have been following across the platform provided me that extra nudge to unpack and re-examine the stones that I have had in my possession for so long. Since a gemology degree requires so many hours of study under a microscope, many of the patterns and inclusions in the stones are etched into my memory. However, seeing the colors and shapes in person again sparked a new source of inspiration in my work.

The process for this painting is outlined in the online workshop that I wrote, “The Abstracting Workshop”. I have been painting this process for a couple of years now and it really presents limitless possibilities with color and shape. I am pushing myself with more glazing than I have in years past and I love the results. The process is pretty forgiving as well, allowing for a change in direction at any stage in the painting.. the method allows you to change without veering completely off course.

Natural gemstone colors are excellent for decor as they introduce a calming and soothing atmosphere to any setting. From serene blues to earthy greens and warm hues, these colors establish a connection with nature. They enhance the beauty of decor, aiding in relaxation amid our busy lives. Abstract paintings using these tones infuse a tranquil ambiance, making our surroundings more inviting and serene.
