You can go Uptown or Downtown..

There is a lot of emotion that I put into every one of my paintings. As I paint, the colors I am using remind me of previous feelings and thoughts, all of which I think about while I paint. Sometime the brush moves wildly along the surface of the canvas and other times it is slow and deliberate. The beauty of painting abstract is being able to harness all of these movements into a cohesive composition.

The initial inspiration that drove me towards painting has always been rock formations, aged concrete and peeling paint in the city of San Diego. What’s interesting to me is that the same elements differ wildy in appearance from city to city. I am inspired by the many patches of beige and white paint that is used to repair or cover street graffiti in my city. It is irregular, unmatched and often worn..unlike the actual brightly colored street graffiti that lives under it.

Furthermore, my training and experience as a Graduate Gemologist fine tuned my vision to notice variances and irregularities in surfaces. When I use a microscope, I am testing color, looking for inclusions and noticing very subtle changes throughout a gemstone or diamond. I find myself adding these inclusions subconsciously into the surfaces I paint. They are the “birth marks” I include in all of my paintings. My “signature”.

“Uptown Downton” is a textural painting resembling many of the surfaces I remember and cherish. The colors in this piece are reminiscent of a childhood in the 1970’s..they are reminiscent of a child with a mother who had a very critical decorating eye… and quite possibly learned while waiting patiently while loads of wallpaper sample books were lugged from shelf to table and carefully examined.
