Which class should I take first- UPDATE

🚨📣EDIT: New for 2023! Please find my new recommendations with updated workshops, by following this link.

With the new release of my latest online workshop, “Expanding on Color” I want to update my stance on which of my online workshops you should take first. Here is the latest news including the new workshop release.

There is a reason that we first filmed a color class way back in 2009 when I decided to teach online art workshops. I strongly believe that in order to make the best art, you need a complete understanding about paint and pigments and in my case, how the layering of different paint impacts your artwork. Therefore, the “Expanding on Color” workshop is the best foundation for all artists. This workshop contains about 5 hours of footage including the science, discussion, color mixing and color theory principles that will benefit artists at all levels. In addition to the information about color, Julie will use these techniques in her visual layering process across two paintings start to finish. Understanding paint is the first step in the layering process. In this workshop, you get both: information about pigments and color mixing PLUS Julie’s abstract painting techniques. There is a second powerhouse online workshop and that is “Expressionism Vol 2”. This workshop does NOT explain about the science of pigment and paint. It has a much larger supply list compared to the Expanding Color workshop. The Expressionism Vol 2 workshop features video instruction across 4 paintings start to finish. This workshop helps students understand and complete almost every technique featured in my entire abstract collection. Blending, composition, mark making, and layering. If you are a fan of my art, you will learn to paint like me if you complete this workshop. Work on techniques with me and expand your repertoire by learning a better understanding of my processes. The run time on this workshop is approximately 6 hours!

The “Caught Up in the Layers” workshop is what I would call “supplemental”. The instruction is a little lighter technique wise, so it would be better fo someone with acrylic painting experience under their belt already. I highlight my 8 step process for developing abstract paintings. If you are painting and have trouble understanding when a piece is finished, or would like to know how to develop abstract compositions, I would take a look at this workshop. This workshop also compliments the written instruction featured in my latest book, “Caught Up in the Layers”.

The same thing applies to the BRIGHTS! online workshop. This workshop covers 2 bright paintings start to finish with an emphasis on transparent pigments. This course will help you maximize the bright capabilities of artist grade paint. The BRIGHTS! workshop covers a very small percentage of the “Expanding on Color” workshop and would be a great workshop for students who are interested in making bright art to follow up with after completing the "Expanding on Color” course.

Th remainder of my online workshop catalogue contains older “boutique” type classes which demonstrate a specific type of product or technique (collage for example). The classes mentioned in this post are newer footage and the best quality that I have produced since I began filming workshops in 2009. The class content is always improving based on the questions and feedback that I receive from students. All class footage i recorded. All classes feature unlimited access once you purchase them and all workshops feature feedback and help from ME, whenever you need it.

We have a great Private Facebook Group that is always learning. Students have access to all of the feedback I provide across all workshops when you join at least one workshop with me. That in itself is an amazing learning opportunity.

Please feel free to post comments/questions to this post and I will be happy to answer them. I always look forward to painting with you!
