In Stanley Tucci's Kitchen

I’ve always enjoyed Stanley Tucci’s work on screen..but it is his new CNN show about the food in Italy that I am currently engrossed with! I can’t get the images of the food out of my head. The show is inspiring us as we navigate through quarantine. We’ve never been a family that eats out in restaurants very often so the simplicity of the cooking in Italy really has me transfixed! I smile through every episode!

I think the cooking resonates with me because I make complicated layered abstract paintings as simple as possible. This is not an easy task. I am maximizing minimalism and pushing as far as I can. You can see part of the journey of this painting in the images below:

At the beginning, I am only inspired by a color palette. Yellow. I think about the complexity of these tones and their translucency every step of the way. At one point, I almost give up on the yellow, but I power through and continue back very carefully so that I can retain the brightness and the depth without making mud as I paint. I push and pull the paint in this piece for about 2 weeks. Here is a close up of the light blue detail:

A painting with a single, primary color can look easy, but I assure you this is not the case. I continue while planting small textural details throughout. The challenge is also to keep the same color temperature and understanding when that blue may not look just right and how to use glazing to correct it.

If you would like to learn how to layer acrylic paint like I do, consider one of my online workshops. The Expressionism Vol 2 class is the largest and one of the newest workshops I host. The worksop contains 6 hours of footage through 4 paintings that I film start to finish. My video includes my mistakes, my thought process, my technique and so much more! I am even around to check on you every day in the private Facebook Group that I hold for my students. You can read my feedback to every student and participate if you feel comfortable.

Thank you so much for your incredible teaching.  Your commitment to giving your students honest feedback so we can grow is remarkable!
