This was a good question..

Every week I solicit my students to ask them what questions they have.. I’ve been making small, quick videos that highlight some of them and sharing them with my audience on Instagram. A great question came in recently asking me why I use Heavy Bodied paints sometimes, rather than Fluid acrylics. Take a look:

The video linked above was shot in beautiful 4K video.. Sites like facebook will compress it. If the picture doesn’t look crystal clear to you, please inquire with your provider.

I started out using fluid acrylics and for several years, never owned any heavy bodied paints. I feel that each paint has its purpose in the artists’s studio. To me, fluid acrylics are easier to move. They are great for painting in small spaces and for use in detail work. They allow fast coverage. Specifically, I always use them in the beginning stages of my art, during the period where I am placing initial layers of paint and looking for inspiration how to further develop each abstract composition.

The “body” of heavy bodied paints is rich and luxurious. When applied thick, it can cover the texture in a subtract. It holds shape and allows the artist to make marks deep into the paint. While it does take more elbow grease to move around the canvas, it still mixes and blends beautifully. To me, there is no difference in the ability to mix colors and blend either type of paint.

Hopefully this video helps you hammer out any questions you may have regarding the two choices. If you have any questions related to your art practice, send me an email (you can use the “contact:” button here on the website) and I will get back to you…Maybe I’ll even make you a video explaining my answer!
