During the Russian Revolution, jewels were smuggled out of the Vladimir palace by an officer dressed as an old woman or a worker (details are a little fuzzy). The jewels made it safely to London where, years later, some of them were sold in 1921 to Queen Mary. The Vladimir Tiara was designed originally to hold pearls, however the Tiara was redesigned to hold the most beautiful emeralds in each of the drops. It’s worth an image search to see.. This painting captures the secret journey of these jewels and the glowing greens of those emeralds as I imagine what it would be like to smuggle such amazing treasure from one place to another.
