Captain's Log: Day 2

Here we are...slowly plugging along on a new painting this week. I made a deal with my daughter that if she allowed me to paint for an hour every day, I would take her to do whatever else she wanted to do during Spring Break. She bought it.

During the second day working on this painting, the focus has now switched from getting paint onto the canvas to building up the composition. Paint coverage is one thing, but I use paint to act as support for the remaining elements of the painting. To me, paint must be rich..layered and I would even go so far as to say luscious.... These qualities can only be obtained by slowly building up layer upon layer of paint. The transparent qualities of the paint I work with allow each layer of paint to take on a different look depending on what has been painted underneath that layer. It is that quality specifically, which I feel really adds richness to my art.

If you didn't see it yesterday, click here to see the painting after day 1.

Hopefully we will see you tomorrow!
